Orchid Plants

purchased this pretty orchid plant, along with another one that has darker magenta flowers, at Trader Joe's using a gift card I received for Christmas. Orchids are one of my favorite flowers. They add such drama and a splash of color to any room. This plant spends most of its time in the living room, but since the house is dry from the winter heat, I move the plants into the bathroom every couple of days for some much needed humidity. So far, both orchids seem to be happy. All of this plant's buds have opened since I brought it home a month ago. I've only owned one orchid plant before this and I never could get it to bloom again. Any orchid experts out there? If you have suggestions for getting orchids to re-bloom, please share!

  1. I love them because the flowers last so long.

I had one at the office that I got to rebloom three times. It got about one hour of morning sun and then moderate light the rest of the day. Once a week I would take it to the kitchen, and ran water through the roots to soak the wood chips. Some people fill the sink and let the plant sit in the water for 10 minutes or so. Added an orchid fertilizer once a month. Janet from The Gardner's Cottages swear by adding coffee every now and then but now sure how often she does it.

  3. Love the pretty pink petals in your creamy bathroom. I have never been able to get an orchid to bloom again despite trying several times over the years. My mother and neighbor have though and both claim to have neglected them!

  5. I'm not an orchid grower, but I was given an orchid as a gift two years ago. The orchid grower told my friend to water it once a week by putting three ice cubes onto the soil in its pot. I do that every Sunday. It works great...no over or under watering and my orchid always blooms. Good luck.

  6. I have had mine for 3 years now and looks like it will bloom again, it's just started growing the stalk for the flowers. I had mine in morning light and it did well for two years, just moved it to another window and now the leaves look they are a little wrinkled. I guess it needs morning sun. Your plant is beautiful. Maybe mine needs more moisture too.
I like the wooden shelf on your water tank on toilet, never seen one but would like to get one.
    Have a great week

  7. I have never had an orchid bloom a second time in my home in New England. When I lived in Florida I had lovely ones growing outside. Yours is beautiful...good luck and enjoy it.

  8. Unbelievable color! I haven't ever had an orchid bloom again once the initial blossoms die. I also like that wooden shelf on your toilet tank- did you all make that or did you purchase it? Thanks, and have a great day!

    1. Nancy, the wooden tank cover came with the toilet (it has a wooden seat and seat cover also), which matches the wooden vanity. All were purchased at Lowe's Home Improvement in 2003. The manufacturer is Sottini. Thanks for visiting My Little Bungalow,

  9. Lovely photos!! I adore orchids but never have bought one as I have heard they are fickle. I hope you have luck with it.
Thanks for your always thoughtful comments on my blog. Have not heard back from my MRI but they got me in very quick and its been 9 days since the MRI so I expect my dr will phone this week.

The flowers at Crate & Barrel were nice but the white peonies were the best. I am thinking of getting some. I took more photos so if you want me to send to you don't hesitate to email me. I got close ups of the magnolias and the peonies. Not cheap though.

Hope all is well! Snowing hard here. I forget which state you are in, or have you mentioned? Va?
