Cocktail Hour: Maiden's Blush




It's Friday. Time for a little cocktail to kick off the weekend! Here's a simple martini recipe using gin, orange liqueur, lemon juice and grenadine. Grenadine is a sweetened pomegranate-orange syrup used in cocktails. I was perusing the small cocktail mixer section at Whole Foods (to my disappointment, they have stopped carrying my favorite brand of sour mixer), when I saw this bottle of grenadine and thought, why not.

Thus began my search for a simple cocktail recipe that uses grenadine. I flipped through a bartender's recipe book and found this gin-based martini called Maiden's Blush. It's strong! It uses only half a teaspoon of grenadine to just give the drink the slightest pink blush. I added extra, and would double the amount next time.

Maiden's Blush

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. 

Add 1.5 ounces gin
1 teaspoon orange liqueur such as Triple Sec (I used Cointreau)
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon grenadine

Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass.

    Also, we're imminently painting our kitchen, and I think I've chosen Bleeker Beige because it looks so wonderful in your mud room. It's between that and Glacial Till.

  2. You are so intrepid with your drinks! I'm the boring kind...you can press pretty much anything alcoholic in my hands and I'll drink it up! I'm a lazy mixer though, so I generally make myself one of two drinks: a vodba, as we've dubbed it in our circles, which is just half and half vodka and Bailey's, served over ice.

    My "other" drink is a Bloody Caesar. I don't understand WHY Americans don't know about Bloody Caesars (also dubbed Bloody Seizures after you've had a few...). Mott's Clamato juice (I buy "The Works" flavour) with vodka. Simple and easy and always hits the spot! Waaay better than a Bloody Mary, and much less work!

    1. Ann, your "vodba" sounds delicious -- and simple! I don't care for tomato juice at all, so I'd have to pass on the Bloody Caesar. I have a wonderful cocktail recipe coming up this Friday in time for the weekend. It might be my favorite yet.

    2. Hahaha, if you are ever in Montreal, I'll make you one! I HATE tomato juice, it gives me the willies. But Clamato and vodka are fine by me! It's one of those things, you'll just have to trust me!

      During the summer, we love having our apéro with a pastis. We prefer "Berger" brand. Given your french ancestry, you might have a taste for a good pastis, too!
